Orton/Gillingham Practicum Course

The Miami University course in multisensory phonics instruction, Course number 699.b was held this past summer at Mayerson Academy, Highland Avenue, Cincinnati. Mayerson Academy is a not-for-profit institution which is funded primarily by the Mayerson Foundation. Its primary goal is teacher development and the Academy works closely with Cincinnati Public Schools. Those who took the course received their instruction at Mayerson and did their practicum work at Rockdale Elementary School, Rockdale Ave., which is one mile north of Mayerson.



Course participants had the opportunity daily to tutor a child with learning disabilities, putting into practice the knowledge they gained from the course. Tutor trainees were supervised during each lesson by a Master Teacher.

Miami offered three graduate credits for successful completion of the course. The cost of the course was the cost of three graduate credits at that time. The only requirement for admission to the course is a bachelor’s degree in any field. Dr. Thomas Southern of the Educational psychology Department of Miami was the faculty coordinator for the course.

The Ohio Valley Branch of the International Dyslexia Association offered several scholarships for the course.
