Orton/Gillingham Practicum Course

The Miami University course in multisensory phonics instruction, Course number 699.b was held this past summer at Mayerson Academy, Highland Avenue, Cincinnati. Mayerson Academy is a not-for-profit institution which is funded primarily by the Mayerson Foundation. Its primary goal is teacher development and the Academy works closely with Cincinnati Public Schools. Those who took the course received their instruction at Mayerson and did their practicum work at Rockdale Elementary School, Rockdale Ave., which is one mile north of Mayerson.

Course participants had the opportunity daily to tutor a child with learning disabilities, putting into practice the knowledge they gained from the course. Tutor trainees were supervised during each lesson by a Master Teacher.

Miami offered three graduate credits for successful completion of the course. The cost of the course was the cost of three graduate credits at that time. The only requirement for admission to the course is a bachelor’s degree in any field. Dr. Thomas Southern of the Educational psychology Department of Miami was the faculty coordinator for the course.

The Ohio Valley Branch of the International Dyslexia Association offered several scholarships for the course.

How We Can Help

Tutoring, testing, and other referral information can be obtained by calling our Branch at (513) 651-4747. We have Parent Support Groups, as well. Many of our 220-230 members are actively involved in the treatment and remediation of dyslexia. Our members are educators, psychologists, physicians, individuals with dyslexia, and parents. We represent a network of parents and professionals who have dealt with learning disability issues on an individual basis with local public and private schools. One of IDA's most important objectives is to educate the educators and raise their awareness of dyslexia in order to increase early intervention in the schools.
