This summer, Mayerson Academy will host two courses in multisensory language instruction in partnership with the College of Mount Saint Joseph. The courses are part of the Mount’s Ohio Reading Endorsement Program, and qualify for three of the eighteen hours required for a teacher to receive his/her reading endorsement from the state of Ohio. The practicum courses offer teachers the opportunity to learn the scientifically proven best methods for teaching reading, writing, spelling and grammar to children who are struggling readers. Those who take the course will receive their instruction at Mayerson Academy and will do their practicum work at a nearby Cincinnati Public Elementary School.
Course participants will have the opportunity daily to tutor a child with learning disabilities, putting into practice the knowledge that they are gaining from the course. They will be guided in the planning and execution of each lesson by an experienced Orton/Gillingham practitioner.
RDG 591 Evidence-Based Practicum. This Orton/Gillingham training includes 45 hours of direct instruction in the code and structure of the English language at Mayerson Academy, as well as supervised teaching of children with learning differences.

The cost of the Mayerson course is $600. This does not include college credit, which can be purchased from the Mount for $199.00 per graduate credit. Materials for the course will cost approximately $100.
The Ohio Valley Branch of the International Dyslexia Association will offer a few partial scholarships for the courses. Those interested in a scholarship should contact Jeanne Anderson, President of the OVB, at 513-871-7851. An application form for the scholarship will be posted on the Ohio Valley Branch website, cincinnatidyslexia.org. Scholarship requests, including the completed application, must be submitted to OVB by April 5, 2010.

Mayerson Academy is a not-for-profit institution which is funded primarily by the Mayerson Foundation and other philanthropic organizations in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Its primary goal is teacher development, and the Academy works closely with Cincinnati Public Schools. However, this course is open to teachers from all schools and anyone with a bachelor’s degree who is interested in learning multisensory teaching methods.
