Children’s Dyslexia Centers’ Course

The Cincinnati and Norwood locations of the Children’s Dyslexia Centers combine each summer to offer Initial Level Orton-Gillingham Tutor Training, This year’s training begins Tuesday, June 14, 2011.This course is accredited by IMSLEC (International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council), which is a body that accredits Orton-Gillingham courses.

Course set-up:

· Applications for the course are available by January and due March 1. Applicants are interviewed by the Center Directors in early spring, who choose 4 or 5 applicants for each Center as scholars for the year-long tutor-training practicum.

·  A fourteen-day introduction in the summer  includes twelve supervised practicum lessons. The 2011 summer course will take place at the Cincinnati Learning Center from June 14-July 7. University credit is available through The College of Mount St. Joseph.

Upon completion of the summer course, half of the scholars are assigned to the Cincinnati Center and half are assigned to the Norwood Center to complete the school year component of the practicum. From early September through early May, each scholar receives invaluable supervised guidance and feedback while fulfilling the requirement of tutoring two children twice a week. The training also includes mandatory attendance at four Saturday lectures (two each semester) at the Norwood Center.

· Scottish Rite Initial Level Certification is awarded at the end of the year to those fulfilling the requirements. This certification is required for anyone seeking future employment at the Children’s Dyslexia Centers.

The Scottish Rite Masons generously underwrite this course, which is designed to mutually benefit the scholars and the Children’s Dyslexia Centers. By offering free Initial Level Orton-Gillingham tutor training, our Centers are able to service many more children. A fee is charged for the materials and for the required background check. The course is limited to 4-5 participants per Center.

Graduate credit from The College of Mount St. Joseph is available for the summer portion of the course for $597 ($199 per credit hour).
